A bad binder blames his tools...
Tools are the subject of many conversations both in our Lab and outside of it, especially as Christmas approaches! Whilst good tools are coveted by all of us, exactly where to find the perfect bonefolder or a dental tool honed against generations of patients teeth, takes on an almost mythical significance due to the lack of hand tools created specifically for conservation.
So, rather than discussing the popular suppliers we all rely on heavily for day-to-day orders, here are a few of the suppliers offering something a little bit more special; tool catalogues to mull over with a colleague and a credit card...
Jeff Peachey- for knives which are perfectly balanced, exquisitely sharpened and make leather work a pleasure. I find Jeff's lifting knives invaluable when working with the fine, brittle leather on Islamic bindings, but they're equally useful when reattaching loose boards on Western bindings.
Jim Croft- another fine American toolmaker, this time producing bonefolders from natural (and sustainably sourced) materials. Each tool is shaped by hand and will become a mainstay on your bench. Jim's tools are available through Talas.
DICTUM- the finest variety of tools you could wish for. This German company offers tools (and some materials) from the best brands you know of and dozens that you will only realise today are exactly what you need to perfect your practice. The catalogue alone is the stuff of daydreams.
Muji- Not really conservation tools, but the best aprons in the world, and some of the nicest stationery too... Oh, and then there are the pots, the desk tidys, and the acrylic drawers... You get the picture!
So, whilst I am afraid I cannot offer you a source of good, heavy, Sheffield steel dental tools, I hope I have pointed you towards some of the finest tools available to us now, a few covetable accessories and one or two Christmas present ideas. And as far as blaming tools is concerned, perhaps the proverb is based on another profession, because in ours, the right tool will make all the difference.
